In order to get a jump on the competition, the Xbox 360 was rushed to completion far too rapidly. The result of this haste is that it has a failure rate of over 30 percent. The Xbox 360 is a frail device because of design and manufacturing mistakes. Its cooling system is inadequate and barely keeps up with the heat output of it's circuitry. When it gets too hot, one or more of it's design 'bugs' spring to life and eventually kills your machine. You will have to baby your Xbox and keep it cool if you wish to prolong its life. This article presents the different methods of preventing your Xbox 360 from overheating. 1.) Although no one is going to deliberately block the cooling vents, there are several ways in which you may do this unknowingly. These involve placing the Xbox on soft shaggy surfaces which act to block air currents. 2.) Make sure that the Xbox is in an area with plenty of ventilation. Therefore, avoid keeping the Xbox in enclosures like cabinets, racks or bookcases. It certainly doesn't make any sense to exercise great care in keeping the cooling vents open while placing the machine in a confined space where air can't reach it. 3.) Try placing your Xbox on it's side which exposes more of it's surface area to the surrounding air. You may also want to blow air across your Xbox with a small fan. 4.) Keep the Xbox away from any sources of heat such as heaters, very warm electronics, stoves, radiators and furnaces. Additionally, make sure not to expose your Xbox to direct sunlight. 5.) In addition to keeping the Xbox cool, we can't overlook the cooling requirements of the power adapter or power brick. It's a very natural thing to put the power brick down on the floor. But if you place it on a shaggy carpet, this can interfere with the currents of air flow needed for cooling. The above suggestions are preventative measures for your Xbox when it is brand new if you wish to avoid heating problems in the future. However, if this is your first run in with the ring of death, then these steps should be your first actions to take. Hopefully this first time heat build up shut down the Xbox before any real damage could be done. About the Author: Marc Sandford is a gaming enthusiast and writer.
