Owing to the enormous success of such social networking sites as Friends Reunited, MySpace and Facebook, Xorianous.com is the latest entry into the world of online communication. Yet, while the big players in this field take a generic approach of building communities of people who share interests and activities, Xorianous.com is specific in its aim: to unite and reunite Cypriot villagers around the world.
This innovative scheme belongs to Tas Georgopoulos, Director of Xorianous Limited and Swift Digital Solutions Limited. Georgopoulos, 33, wants to reunite first-generation Cypriots, as well as enlighten the second and third generation about their origins and family. He explains where the concept for the project came from. When you meet somebody of Cypriot origin, the same old questions arise: Where are you from? What village are your parents from? Whilst in my local delicatessen, I got talking to the owner and naturally, we began talking about our parents villages. It just so happened that he was from the village next to my mothers. This planted the seed for the website, and since Cypriots continually try to find associations amongst themselves, I thought an accessible and user-friendly database is the most efficient way of connecting people. Indeed, the site is straightforward and getting registered could not be simpler. Registration is free, where each members profile page lists the villages of both their parents, as well as providing a direct match with other users from the same village. Each member can register up to four villages. In order to post a message to, or receive a message from another user requires a minimal, annual payment of 12.50. In nearly two weeks of the website going live, Xioranous.com has received over 16,000 hits from Cypriots from all over the globe, including the UK, Canada, Australia and Cyprus to name but a few. Since Late November 2007 the site has reached over 60,000 hits and is still growing. Moreover, it has gained newspaper exposure in a Cypriot tabloid, a UK Greek Newspaper as well as continued media interest. The site is constantly developing, with plans to include photo libraries for each individual village, along with a brief history and current events happening in and around the areas. If ever there was a way to unite and reunite Cypriots, Xorianous.com is it. As a community, we can learn more about our origins and history, as well as maintain the Cypriot culture amongst the younger generations for years to come.
