I guess we have all been there at some point, you type up a nice e-mail and attach a few (what you thought were) small photos taken on you latest 10 or 20 megapixel camera and then press the send button. After you wait what seems like an age you then get a message telling you that the file is to large, how annoying is that?. The problem is though that large file transfer is an issue.
For business travellers this is a much greater problem as they often have to send large documents, sales proposals or complicated spreadsheets with macros. It is not so much the email text that is the problem as even on the largest of emails this is relatively small, the problem lies with the attachments you need to send. Often this is photos and we don't really realize just how large the file is that we just took on our 20 MP camera. Equally video files are also getting larger despite advances in video compression technologies. For large file transfers e-mail is simply not the way forward so you will need to do some checking online and find a different methodology. Because the problem is becoming prevalent there are a number of companies that provide solutions for business users and home users too. Large files aren't necessarily restricted to e-mails though as business often need to share other types of data, for example geographic maps or computer aided design files which even in lightweight form can be very large. The methods of file transfer will of course vary from FTP type sites to sites that send a link to the recipient and make the file available for download for a set period of time. In reality there are a wide range of providers offering these services which at one time was simply unheard of, but in true business fashion where there is a demand then you can be sure someone will come up with a solution. Before choosing a solution however a little forethought is required, for example how often do you need to use this type of service, or how large are the files likely to be? You even need to be sympathetic to the security of the data you are sending as it could be a security risk to either your business or department. If you find that you are sending large files online quite often for business purposes, your company may be able to come up with another solution. They may subscribe to such a service, or perhaps find a way to get around the problem all together. In summary now you are aware of some of the methods open to you for large file transmittal all that remains is for you to define your needs to fit your ongoing requirements. There are solution out there or you can illicit the help of your local IT support provider to perhaps help you in the right direction.
