Most people are aware that acid reflux is when the contents of the stomach back up into your throat through the esophagus. As with most medical problems the reason this happens is sometimes complex yet, somewhat paradoxically, in most cases it is very simple to resolve and find quick relief.

People suffering from acid reflux are experiencing a sense of burning or a sharp pain located in the middle of the chest. Since the pain is focused in the middle of the chest many people become justifiably concerned that it may actually be a heart problem. For this reason alone, the possibility that it might be a heart problem, it is important for acid reflux sufferers to touch base with their family physician.

These symptoms of acid reflux are most likely to happen after a heavy meal. For this reason there are many people who avoid the onset of acid reflux by starting their meals lightly with soup or salad thus easing the stress on one's digestive system.

The side effects of this pain and burning may manifest themselves in a variety of ways. In addition to the painful burning, other problems may include becoming temporarily hoarse because of the damage done by the acid backing up in the throat.

When people speak of experiencing heartburn they are actually describing a symptom of acid reflux. This is also frequently characterized as tightness felt in the area of the chest and sometimes there is even difficulty in breathing. Heartburn actually is the most common symptom of acid reflux reported by the majority of those experiencing this painful disability.

It is frequently the case that acid reflux can be treated without the use of prescriptive medicine. Sometimes simply correcting poor eating habits such as eating too fast is all that it takes to minimize or completely eliminate the painful symptoms of acid reflux.

It is important to realize that the expression "acid reflux disease" is an unfortunate misnomer. Strictly speaking this is not a disease. Rather it is a case of the digestive system not functioning properly. The good news here is that quite frequently a few simple life style changes will make a huge difference in one's quality of life whereas with any disease you will usually need medical intervention.

One most important tip to bear in mind though is that although this acid reflux is not a disease it does have to be taken seriously by those experiencing it since the burning sensation experienced by many is a literal burning of tissue caused by the stomach acid. Therefore obtaining relief from acid reflux remains a serious and urgent condition.
